In our own lives, we can follow Edison's example when we lose an investor or an employee unexpectedly leaves our startup. Instead he accepted it and went on to found Square, one of the largest payment-processing startups in the world. We always get something out of passionate intensity and energy.

These great entrepreneurs all used strategies from the ancient Stoics to flip obstacles upside and find opportunities within them. They were not academics, but men of action.

One of the reasons, she says, is we're often unbelievably hard on ourselves when it comes to managing money. They put pressure on themselves to be better at managing money, and blame themselves for the situation they're in," she says. Some people hide their problems from their loved ones until they no longer can — when the bankruptcy notice has been served and the sheriff is coming to repossess the house.

9 financial problems after a natural disaster—and what you can do about them

Another reason, according to Debbie Joffe Ellis, a psychologist and professor at New York's Columbia University, is we often equate "success" with career and material possessions. When financial and career success is the yardstick we all measure ourselves by, it can feel devastating when things aren't working out.

On top of that, we often fall into the habit of ruminating or "catastrophising" about our money problems, Dr Joffe Ellis says, which only makes things worse. The chronic stress and emotional upheaval that goes with financial hardship is powerful enough to change the brain, says Nicolas Cherbuin, who runs a brain imaging lab at the Centre for Research on Ageing, Health and Wellbeing at the Australian National University.

In a recent research project, Dr Cherbuin and his colleagues showed that people who reported dealing with financial hardship — such as going without meals or accessing welfare services — had differences in the brain and were more prone to depressive symptoms. While researchers can't be sure of the causes for the brain changes, the chronic stress associated with financial hardship may have a role to play. It's never easy to talk about something you're struggling with, especially if it's money.

But, there are some things that can help. If you're dealing with a financial problem and aren't prepared to open to anyone in your immediate circle, consider reaching out to a financial counsellor. It can be a huge relief to talk to a financial counsellor. And then, feeling more empowered, to take the next step," Sarah Brown-Shaw says. If someone you know or you suspect that someone in your life is having problems with money, empathy can go a long way, Ms Brown-Shaw adds. But be mindful that you almost certainly don't know the whole story.
